Not only are algae sources for fuels and food, algae are also being considered as a feedstock for the production of range of sustainable chemicals from plastics to fertilizers. Seaweeds have been used as a fertilizer for centuries, and some microalgae fix atmospheric nitrogen and could be a source of organic fertilizers (“green manure”). The production of industrial chemicals and fertilizers from microalgae is still in its infancy, with many more breakthroughs still to come.
